Manila, May 30, 2016 –– As the evolution of technology gives rise to new ideas, Ashoka Philippines brings together and supports local leaders who use their innovations for the greater good. On May 30, Ashoka Philippines honors its latest Global Fellow at the 2016 Fellow Launch and Induction Ceremony, at The Globe Tower in Bonifacio Global City. This year’s Ashoka Fellow is Mr. Laurindo Garcia, whose technological achievements empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex (LGBTI) youth and people living with HIV worldwide. The Ceremony is the latest in a series of efforts by Ashoka Philippines to build a global network of change makers whose ideas transform societies for the better.

2016 Ashoka Fellow Laurindo Garcia is the founder of the B-Change Group, a social enterprise using innovative technology to provide care, support, and advocacy services for young LGBTI people and their allies across Asia. The group’s various applications and engagement platforms connect LGBTI youth and people affected by HIV to peers, health experts, and support groups. Since its inception, B-Change has expanded internationally, with hubs in the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States. At the local level in Manila, B-Change has worked with public, private, and citizen sector organizations to grant youth access to proper health resources. Ultimately, Laurindo seeks to use mobile technologies and social media to put inclusion on the map and in the hands of the people.  Doing so will enhance the lives and health outcomes of LGBTI youth and HIV-positive people around the world.

“Laurindo’s work combines the growing importance of social media and the digital economy with the urgent need for HIV and AIDS awareness, testing, treatment, and support. His unique ability to bring all these elements together makes him an excellent candidate for the Ashoka Global Fellowship,” remarked Terri Jayme-Mora, Ashoka Philippines’ Country Manager. “This kind of work is really necessary, especially in the Philippines, where the World Health Organization says we have one of the world’s fastest growing HIV epidemics.  We at Ashoka are determined to promote Laurindo’s work, both at the local and global level.”

First established in 2013, Ashoka Philippines has been as a catalyst for social entrepreneurship across the country. A global organization, Ashoka Philippines identifies Filipinos whose ideas offer systemic solutions to some of the world’s most imperative issues and awards them with lifetime fellowships to support their initiatives. These leaders are then connected to the international Ashoka network, consisting of over 3,000 fellows from 80 countries, who have developed unique and groundbreaking innovations to address global concerns. As Ashoka’s latest Fellow, Laurindo joins a legacy of Filipinos who have made breakthroughs in financial literacy, women’s rights, and sustainable resources to improve community livelihood. Guided by the hope for a better future, Ashoka builds powerful collaborations between social entrepreneurs, businesses, academia, and the media in order to create a strong and sustainable global community.
