Tony La Viña, Country Representative
Tony La Viña comes to Ashoka following seven years with the World Resources Institute (WRI), where he directed the Biological Resources Program. An environmental and human rights lawyer with a focus on governance, Tony led WRI's work on trade and agriculture, the impact of globalization on poor communities, genetic engineering and bio-safety, and environmental governance in Southeast Asia and China. Before joining WRI in 1998, Tony was an Environment Undersecretary of the Philippines, playing a critical role in getting the Philippines to recognize the land and ancestral domain rights of indigenous peoples and developing the concept of "social acceptability" as integral to environmental impact assessment. T ony was also Chief Negotiator for the Philippines in the implementation of the Conventions on Biological Diversity and Climate Change from 1996-1998 and was a key participant and spokesperson for developing countries in the negotiation of the Kyoto and Cartagena Protocols. He is also part of the negotiating team of the Philippine delegation to the Climate Change Convention in Copenhagen in December 2009. At present, Tony is leading many initiatives in development sector in the Philippines, particularly in the environment, social entrepreneurship and good governance.
Tony obtained his LLM and JSD from Yale Law School and his first degrees from universities in the Philippines. In 1988, straight from law school, he co-founded the Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center-Friends of the Earth Philippines, where he worked for seven years. In addition to his work with Ashoka, Tony serves as Dean of the Ateneo School of Government in the Philippines.
Harvey Keh, Program Manager – Youth Venture
Harvey is currently the program manager of Youth Venture Philippines. He is also the current director for Youth Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship of the Ateneo School of Government. He was founder of Pathways to Higher Education – an education reform program that aims to help marginalized Filipino students gain access to and finish higher education. He was also a founding member of Synergeia Foundation in 2003 which is a coalition of different organizations and individuals whose main aim is to help improve basic education in the Philippines. In 2006, he co-founded AHON Foundation that seeks to help improve reading skills of Filipino children by building public elementary school libraries.
He is also a part-time faculty in the Ateneo de Manila University and writes for different newspapers and acts as commentator to a number of radio programs. He is also an entrepreneur who helps run their family business. He is an Asia 21 Young Leaders fellow and has been invited as a speaker to a number of conventions and workshops. Harvey is also the lead convener of Kaya Natin Movement that aims to promote good governance and ethical leadership in the Philippines. At present, Harvey’s work reflects his passion and dedication to help the country and inspire many young leaders to take positive action.
Tieza Santos, Consultant
Tieza serves as a full-time consultant to YV and Venture programs of Ashoka Philippines. She graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in 2006 with an AB degree and immediately pursued her Master’s Degree the year after. She joined the Ateneo college faculty to teach at the undergraduate level at the young age of 22 and later became the Program Manager of the Philippine Youth Business Foundation, the local associate program of the London-based Prince’s Youth Business International founded by the Prince of Wales. She is also involved in several environment initiatives working on climate change and renewable energy development for foreign investments.
Other than her Ashoka commitment and involvement in the advocacy for the development of social enterprises in the country, she is also involved in various initiatives and projects internationally, giving her a rich experience with the youth, education, human rights, environment as well as the poverty and development sector. She is also involved with One World Youth Project, a Washington DC-based youth organization working for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and social enterprises worldwide in partnership with several institutions such as Earth Institute, Atlas Corps and Georgetown University, wherein she is the only Filipino Project Ambassador. She is also part of the Asian Youth Forum International, a Japan-based youth network organization working all over the Asian region where she served as the first Filipino President from 2007-2008 and was later appointed in November as one of the advisers.
